The Vernacular Press Act was passed in 1878 during the time of Lord Lytton as the Viceroy of India. However, it was Lord Ripon, who succeeded Lord Lytton as the Viceroy, that repealed the Vernacular Press Act in 1882. The Act had imposed restrictions on the freedom of the press in India and was seen as an attempt to suppress the nationalist movement. Lord Ripon`s repeal of the Act was seen as a significant step towards promoting press freedom in India.
