The First Anglo-Maratha War was concluded by which one of the following?
Explanation
The First Anglo-Maratha War (1775–1782) was formally concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Salbai on May 17, 1782 [1]. The conflict began with the Treaty of Surat (1775) between Raghunath Rao and the Bombay government, which was later replaced by the Treaty of Purandar (1776) by the Calcutta Council. Following a British defeat at the Battle of Wadgaon in 1779, the humiliating Convention of Wadgaon was signed, but it was subsequently rejected by Governor-General Warren Hastings [1]. Hostilities continued until the Treaty of Salbai was negotiated by Mahadji Shinde, which established a long-term peace between the British East India Company and the Maratha Confederacy that lasted for twenty years. Under this treaty, the British retained Salsette but abandoned the cause of Raghunath Rao, recognizing Sawai Madhavrao as the rightful Peshwa [1].
