Explanation
A biodiversity hotspot is a biogeographic region with significant levels of biodiversity that is threatened by human activities. The concept was developed by Norman Myers in 1988. To qualify as a biodiversity hotspot, a region must meet two strict criteria according to Conservation International:
- Endemism: It must contain at least 1,500 species of vascular plants (> 0.5% of the world's total) as endemics. This confirms Statement I, as these areas are unusually rich in unique biodiversity.
- Threat: It must have lost at least 70% of its original primary vegetation. This confirms Statement II, as the designation specifically identifies areas where flora and fauna are under severe and constant threat from habitat loss, overexploitation, and other anthropogenic pressures.
Currently, there are 36 recognized biodiversity hotspots in the world, including four in India: the Himalayas, Western Ghats, Indo-Burma region, and Sundaland.
