Under the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003, what is the maximum number of persons constituting the Central Vigilance Commission including the Chairperson ?
Explanation
The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) is India’s apex anti-corruption agency. According to Section 3(2) of the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003, the Commission shall consist of a Central Vigilance Commissioner as the Chairperson and not more than two Vigilance Commissioners as members. Consequently, the total strength of the Commission cannot exceed three persons.
The CVC was originally established in 1964 based on the recommendations of the Santhanam Committee but was granted statutory status only through the 2003 Act. The Chairperson and members are appointed by the President of India following the recommendation of a high-level committee comprising the Prime Minister, the Union Minister of Home Affairs, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
