Explanation
Trachoma is a chronic infectious disease of the eye caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the world's leading infectious cause of blindness. The infection is transmitted through direct or indirect contact with eye and nose discharges of infected people, particularly young children, and is also spread by flies.
Based on the National Trachoma Survey Report (2014-17), the Government of India declared the country free from "infective trachoma" in 2017. Following years of sustained surveillance and treatment under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI), the World Health Organization (WHO) officially validated India for having eliminated trachoma as a public health problem in 2024. India successfully implemented the WHO-recommended SAFE strategy (Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvement) to reach this goal.
