During the Quit India Movement of 1942, several parallel governments, known as Prati Sarkars, were established across India to challenge British rule. The most long-lasting and effective one was formed in Satara, Maharashtra.
- The Satara Prati Sarkar was led by Nana Patil (popularly known as Kranti Simha Nana Patil) and functioned from 1943 until 1946.
- It organized a volunteer corps called the Toofaan Sena and set up its own administrative systems, including Nyayadan Mandals (people's courts), libraries, and schools.
- Other notable parallel governments of this period included those in Ballia (led by Chittu Pandey), Tamluk (the Jatiya Sarkar in Bengal), and Talcher (Odisha).
