The railway network in India is divided into
Explanation
The Indian Railway network is organized into several administrative zones. Historically, the number of zones has increased to better manage the vast network. For many years, the standard count was 16 zones. In 2010, the Metro Railway, Kolkata was officially declared the 17th zone of Indian Railways.
- In 2019, the Ministry of Railways announced the creation of an 18th zone, the South Coast Railway (SCoR), headquartered at Visakhapatnam.
- As the options provided do not include 18 or 19, 17 zones (Option C) is the most accurate answer based on the classification used in many official records and previous competitive examinations following the 2010 update.
Each zone is headed by a General Manager (GM) who reports directly to the Railway Board.
