In India, aviation security protocols are formulated and monitored by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). According to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by BCAS, security screeners are required to conduct a physical Pat-Down Search on passengers to detect non-metallic prohibited items that may not be picked up by Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMD).

While a search can be conducted based on the screener's subjective suspicion, the prescribed norm for continuous random basis screening is 01 in every 05 passengers (which equivalent to 20% of the total passenger traffic). This mandatory random check ensures a higher level of security even when the electronic screening equipment does not trigger an alarm.
