In which year was CISF declared as an Armed Force of the Union ?

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was established under the Central Industrial Security Force Act, 1968, and officially came into existence on March 10, 1969. Initially, it was created as a civil force for the protection and security of industrial undertakings.

The status of the force was significantly altered by the Central Industrial Security Force (Amendment) Act, 1983 (Act No. 14 of 1983), which formally declared the CISF as an Armed Force of the Union. This amendment was crucial as it brought the force under the ambit of Article 33 of the Indian Constitution, allowing Parliament to restrict certain fundamental rights of its members to ensure discipline and the proper discharge of their duties. Today, the CISF is one of the premier Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, providing security to vital installations, airports, and government buildings.
