The first session of the Indian National Congress (INC) was held from December 28 to 31, 1885, at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Bombay. It was presided over by Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee (W.C. Bonnerjee), a prominent barrister from Calcutta. While Allan Octavian Hume (A.O. Hume), a retired British Civil Service officer, played the lead role in organizing the formation of the Congress, he acted as the General Secretary. Dadabhai Naoroji presided over the second session in 1886. Surendranath Banerjee could not attend the first session as he was concurrently presiding over the Indian National Conference in Calcutta. The inaugural session was attended by 72 delegates from across India.
