Explanation

John B. Goodenough (1922–2023) was an American materials scientist and physicist who was awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He shared the prize with M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino for their pioneering work in the development of lithium-ion batteries.

Goodenough’s crucial contribution was the discovery that using lithium cobalt oxide (LixCoO2) as a cathode could double the voltage potential of the battery compared to previous designs. This breakthrough made batteries powerful and compact enough for commercial use in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and renewable energy storage. At age 97, he became the oldest person ever to receive a Nobel Prize. He passed away in June 2023 at the age of 100.
