Explanation
Rani Durgawati (1524–1564) was the celebrated Queen of the Gond kingdom of Garha-Katanga. She was the daughter of the Chandel Rajput King Keerat Rai and married Dalpat Shah, the son of the Gond ruler Sangram Shah. After the death of Dalpat Shah in 1550, Rani Durgawati took charge of the administration as the regent for her minor son, Bir Narain (also spelled Vir Narayan), who was only five years old at the time.
- Bir Narain: The son on whose behalf she ruled and who later died defending the kingdom against the Mughals.
- Sangram Shah: Her father-in-law and a powerful Gond ruler.
- Dalpat Shah: Her husband who died young.
She is historically significant for her administrative skills and her brave resistance against the Mughal expansion under Emperor Akbar, eventually choosing martyrdom over surrender during the Battle of Damoh.
