Correct:
D
Explanation
In 1904, Charles Weld, an American geologist, and Dorabji Tata (the eldest son of Jamsetji Tata) were exploring the Rajhara Hills in present-day Chhattisgarh to find a source of high-quality iron ore for their proposed steel plant. They encountered the Agarias, a community of traditional iron smelters, carrying baskets of iron ore.
- The Agarias led them to the hills which contained one of the finest iron ore deposits in the world.
- While the Rajhara Hills provided the ore, the lack of a nearby water source led the Tatas to eventually set up their factory at Sakchi (now Jamshedpur) near the confluence of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers.
- The Agarias were instrumental in this discovery, though their traditional craft declined as large-scale industrial production took over. This historical account is prominently featured in NCERT Class 8 History.
