Explanation
‘Arihant’ (INS Arihant) is India's first indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). Developed under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) program, it was commissioned in August 2016 and completed its first deterrent patrol in November 2018. The vessel is a critical component of India's nuclear triad, providing a credible sea-based second-strike capability. It is designed to carry Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs), specifically the K-15 (Sagarika) with a range of 750 km and the K-4 with a range of 3,500 km. The Arihant-class submarines are built at the Shipbuilding Centre in Visakhapatnam with technical assistance from Russia. Its successful deployment makes India the sixth country in the world capable of operating a nuclear triad, alongside the permanent members of the UN Security Council.
