Explanation
The Battle of Rakshasi-Tangadi is popularly known as the Battle of Talikota, which took place on January 23, 1565. It was a watershed conflict fought between the Vijayanagara Empire, led by the Chief Minister Aliya Rama Raya, and a combined alliance of the Deccan Sultanates, including Bijapur, Ahmadnagar, Golconda, and Bidar. The battle occurred near the villages of Rakkasagi and Tangadigi, which gave it its alternative name. Despite initial advantages, the Vijayanagara forces were defeated after key generals switched sides, leading to the capture and execution of Rama Raya. This defeat resulted in the systematic destruction of the capital city, Hampi, and marked the beginning of the terminal decline of the Vijayanagara Empire. In contrast, the Battles of Panipat and Khanwa were significant conflicts in Northern India involving the Mughals.
