“Foot and Mouth Disease” is found in—
Explanation
Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly infectious viral disease caused by the genus Aphthovirus [t1]. It primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, buffalo, pigs, sheep, goats, and various wildlife species like deer and yak [c1][c2][t2]. The disease is characterized by fever and vesicular lesions (blisters) in and around the mouth and on the feet, which can lead to significant economic losses due to reduced milk yields and trade bans [t1][t2][t6]. It is explicitly noted that FMD does not affect dogs or cats [t6]. Furthermore, it is distinct from the human "Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease" caused by the Coxsackie virus; while rare human infection with animal FMD can occur, it is not considered a public health concern [t1][t5][t6]. In India, the National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) targets the control and eventual eradication of FMD in livestock [c2].
