Iron ore from the Kudremukh mines, located in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, is primarily exported through the port of Mangalore (New Mangalore Port) [2]. The Kudremukh deposits are among the largest in the world and were developed as a 100 percent export-oriented unit, specifically under an agreement with Iran [2]. To facilitate efficient transport across the Western Ghats, the iron ore is converted into slurry and transported through a dedicated pipeline directly to the port near Mangaluru [1]. While other ports like Marmagao handle ore from the Goa-Ratnagiri belt and Vishakhapatnam handles Bailadila ore, Mangalore remains the specialized outlet for Kudremukh's magnetite concentrates [3]. Although active mining at Kudremukh ceased in 2006 due to environmental concerns, the infrastructure remains historically and geographically linked to the Mangalore port.
