The Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (JAK RIF) is a distinguished infantry regiment of the Indian Army. Originally the state forces of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, the regiment was integrated into the Indian Army in 1963. It is distinct from the Rashtriya Rifles (RR), which is a specialized counter-insurgency force formed in 1990 that draws its personnel from various regular army units on deputation. While the Rashtriya Rifles operates under the Ministry of Defence and is often affiliated with infantry regiments for manpower, the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles itself is a permanent, regular infantry regiment. It is not a paramilitary force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, nor is it the state's armed police. The regiment is famous for its role in various conflicts, including the 1999 Kargil War, where its personnel, such as Captain Vikram Batra, earned high gallantry awards.
