Explanation
The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation System (KLIS) is a multi-purpose irrigation project located in the state of Telangana [1]. It is constructed on the Godavari River at the confluence point of the Pranahita River in the Jayashankar Bhupalpally district. Described as the world's largest multi-stage lift irrigation project, it is designed to lift water from an elevation of 90 meters to 618 meters above sea level to provide water for irrigation and drinking purposes across several districts of Telangana. The project was proposed by the Government of Telangana in 2015 to make the state drought-proof by diverting floodwaters to various barrages and reservoirs like Sripada Sagar Yellampalli and Mallanna Sagar [1]. While the project was inaugurated in the presence of Chief Ministers from Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, the infrastructure itself is situated within Telangana.
