Question map
Mawsynram, where highest rainfall occurs, is located in
Explanation
Mawsynram is a village located in the East Khasi Hills district of the state of Meghalaya in Northeastern India [t1][t2]. It is globally recognized as the wettest place on Earth, recording the highest average annual rainfall, which is approximately 11,872 millimeters [t2][t3]. The extreme precipitation is primarily due to its geographical position on the crest of the Khasi Hills, where it faces the Bay of Bengal branch of the southwest monsoon [c1][c3]. This location causes a phenomenon known as orographic rainfall, where moist winds are forced to rise over the hills, leading to intense condensation and heavy downpours [c3][t7]. Mawsynram is situated about 16 km west of Cherrapunji (Sohra), another high-rainfall station in the same region [c2][t6]. The unique funnelling effect created by the surrounding mountains further enhances cloud concentration and precipitation in this part of the Meghalaya Plateau [c3].
