National Disaster Management Authority is headed by
Explanation
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is the apex body for disaster management in India, established under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 [1]. According to the Act and official government records, the Prime Minister of India serves as the ex-officio chairperson of the NDMA [2]. The authority consists of a chairperson and up to nine other members nominated by the chairperson [1]. While the NDMA operates under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the Prime Minister remains its head [1]. This structure ensures a high-level political commitment to disaster risk reduction and response, positioning the Prime Minister as the 'crisis manager-in-chief' during national emergencies [3]. At the sub-national levels, the State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs) are headed by the respective Chief Ministers, and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) are headed by District Collectors.
