The place of English East India Company settlement in Madras was known as
Explanation
The English East India Company's settlement in Madras was known as Fort St. George. In 1639, the British merchant Francis Day received permission from the ruler of Chandragiri to build a fortified factory at Madraspatam [3]. This settlement, completed around 1644, replaced Masulipatnam as the English headquarters on the east coast [3]. The Company later issued a charter in 1687 constituting the town of 'Fort St. George' and surrounding territories into a corporation, which is the oldest municipal institution in India . While Fort St. George served as the major trade settlement in Madras, Fort William was the corresponding fortified settlement in Calcutta, established later in 1700 [2]. Elphinstone Circle (now Horniman Circle) is located in Mumbai, and the Marble Palace is a nineteenth-century mansion in North Kolkata, neither of which served as the primary EIC settlement in Madras.
