Explanation
The United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance was held in Durban, South Africa, from 31 August to 8 September 2001 [2]. Often referred to as 'Durban I', this landmark event aimed to establish a global programme of action to eradicate racism and xenophobia. The conference was particularly significant as it took place in post-apartheid South Africa, drawing inspiration from the country's struggle against institutionalized discrimination. While the conference produced the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, it was also marked by significant controversy regarding anti-Zionism and the withdrawal of the United States and Israel. Although previous UN conferences on racism were held in Geneva in 1978 and 1983, the 'Durban process' remains the primary framework for the UN's ongoing anti-racism strategy [2].
