It was officially opened on August 17, 2017, to coincide with Partition Remembrance Day, marking the 70th anniversary of the announcement of the Radcliffe Line boundaries. The project was spearheaded by the Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust (TAACHT) to document and preserve the harrowing experiences and oral histories of the millions displaced during the 1947 Partition. Amritsar was chosen as the location because it was a primary witness to the mass migration and violence, being a major border city that received millions of refugees. The museum features personal artifacts, archival documents, and art installations like the 'Tree of Hope' to promote healing and understanding.
