The Tamraparni (or Thamirabarani) is an east-flowing river in Tamil Nadu that originates in the Agastyarkoodam peak of the Pothigai hills and drains into the Gulf of Mannar in the Bay of Bengal. In contrast, the other three options are major west-flowing rivers of Kerala. The Periyar is the longest river in Kerala and flows into the Arabian Sea [2]. The Bharatpuzha (also known as Ponnani) and the Pamba are also significant west-flowing rivers that originate in the Western Ghats and drain into the Arabian Sea or the Vembanad Lake [2]. While most major peninsular rivers like the Godavari and Krishna flow eastwards, the narrow coastal plain of the west coast is home to numerous swift, short rivers like the Periyar, Bharatpuzha, and Pamba that flow westward [4].
