Which one of the following is a west- flowing river?
Explanation
The Narmada is a major west-flowing river in Peninsular India. Unlike most large peninsular rivers that flow eastwards due to the general slope of the plateau, the Narmada and Tapi are notable exceptions that flow west and discharge their waters into the Arabian Sea [4]. The Narmada flows through a rift valley and forms an estuary at its mouth rather than a delta [4]. In contrast, the Mahanadi, Godavari, and Krishna are classified as east-flowing rivers [5]. These rivers originate from the Western Ghats or central highlands and flow towards the Bay of Bengal, where they form extensive deltas [2]. The Western Ghats act as the primary water divide, separating the major eastward drainage from the smaller streams and the large westward-flowing Narmada and Tapi systems [4].
