Venkataraman Ramakrishnan, also known as Venki Ramakrishnan, is a Nobel Prize-winning structural biologist of Indian origin who served as the President of the Royal Society from 2015 to 2020. Born in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, he was the first person of Indian origin to hold this prestigious position in the society's history, which dates back to 1660. He shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the structure and function of the ribosome. While other scientists like Har Gobind Khorana and C.V. Raman were distinguished Nobel laureates and Fellows of the Royal Society, they never served as its President. Ronald Ross, though born in India, was of British descent and served as a Fellow but not the President. Ramakrishnan succeeded Sir Paul Nurse in the role.
