Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, popularly known as 'Dadasaheb', was the first Speaker of the Lok Sabha [1][t1]. Following the first general elections of 1951-52, the First Lok Sabha was constituted in April 1952, and Mavalankar was unanimously elected as its Speaker on May 15, 1952 [t1][t6][t7]. He served in this capacity until his death on February 27, 1956 [c1][t7]. Before this, he had also served as the President of the Central Legislative Assembly and the Speaker of the Constituent Assembly (Legislative) [t1]. Mavalankar is credited with establishing many parliamentary traditions and rules of procedure that continue to guide the lower house today [t8]. He was succeeded by M. A. Ayyangar, who served as the first Deputy Speaker before becoming the second Speaker [t1][t2]. Sardar Hukam Singh and Neelam Sanjiva Reddy served as the third and fourth Speakers, respectively [c1][t2].
