Who is/was popularly known as the Nightingale of India?

Sarojini Naidu (1879–1949) was a distinguished Indian poet, freedom fighter, and political leader popularly known as the 'Nightingale of India' or 'Bharatiya Kokila'. She earned this title due to the lyrical and rhythmic quality of her poetry, which included famous volumes such as 'The Golden Threshold' and 'The Bird of Time'. Beyond her literary contributions, she was a pivotal figure in the Indian independence movement, serving as the first Indian woman president of the Indian National Congress and the first woman Governor of an Indian state (Uttar Pradesh). While the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar is also sometimes referred to by this title in a contemporary musical context, the historical and academic designation 'Nightingale of India' is primarily associated with Sarojini Naidu's literary and nationalist legacy.
