Q26 (IAS/1999) Geography › Maps & Locations › Regional political geography

Which one of the following statements is correct ?

Result
Your answer: —  Â·  Correct: B
Explanation

Kacchativu is an uninhabited island located in the Palk Strait. Historically, it was administered jointly by India and Sri Lanka. In 1974, through a bilateral maritime boundary agreement, the Government of India formally recognized Sri Lankan sovereignty over the island and handed it over.

Tin Bigha is a narrow strip of land in West Bengal near the India-Bangladesh border. To allow Bangladesh to access its Dahagram-Angarpota enclaves from the mainland, India agreed to hand over this corridor. While it is technically leased to Bangladesh in perpetuity (effective from 1992), it functions as a practical handover of territorial control to ensure contiguous access for Bangladesh.

Therefore, both are territories handed over to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh respectively.
