Explanation
Kanaklata Barua, also known as Birbala, was a teenage freedom fighter from Assam who was martyred during the Quit India Movement in 1942.
- On September 20, 1942, at the age of 17, she led a procession of volunteers called the Mrityu Bahini (Death Squad) with the aim of hoisting the National Flag at the Gohpur police station.
- Despite being warned by the British police under the command of Rebati Mahan Som, she refused to retreat, asserting her right to hoist the flag at the government building.
- She was shot dead by the police while holding the tricolor. After her fall, the flag was picked up by fellow activist Mukunda Kakoti, who was also shot.
- Her sacrifice became a symbol of the intense participation of women and the youth in the final phase of India's struggle for independence.
