Vitamin B1 is also known as
Explanation
Vitamin B1 is scientifically known as thiamin (or thiamine). It was the first vitamin to be discovered in 1897 and was initially termed 'vitamine' because it contains an amino group [2]. Thiamin is a water-soluble vitamin essential for energy metabolism and the proper functioning of the heart, liver, kidney, and brain. It acts as a coenzyme in carbohydrate and branched-chain amino acid metabolism [4]. Historically, it was also called 'aneurin' due to its role in preventing neurological symptoms associated with deficiency [2]. In contrast, riboflavin is the chemical name for vitamin B2 [1], retinol is vitamin A, and tocopherol refers to vitamin E [3]. Thiamin deficiency can lead to conditions like beriberi, particularly in populations with high alcohol consumption or those relying on unenriched white rice.
