Explanation
CORAS, which stands for Commandos for Railway Security, is a specialized commando unit of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) [1]. Launched by the Ministry of Railways on August 14, 2019, the unit was established to provide world-class capabilities for responding to critical situations such as train hijacks, hostage crises, disaster management, and disruptions in railway operations [3]. The unit is primarily composed of trained personnel from the RPF and RPSF who undergo rigorous training in handling landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and sniping. CORAS is strategically deployed in sensitive areas, including Naxal-prone belts and the North East, to safeguard railway infrastructure and ensure passenger safety [3]. A dedicated training center for CORAS has also been established in Jagadhri, Haryana [2].
