Explanation
Lymph, also known as tissue fluid, is a fluid involved in transportation that resides in the intercellular spaces of tissues [1]. It is formed when some amount of plasma, proteins, and blood cells escape through the pores in capillary walls into these spaces [1]. Consequently, lymph is highly similar in composition to blood plasma, although it is colorless and contains a lower concentration of proteins [1]. Both plasma and lymph are components of the extracellular fluid (ECF). While plasma is the fluid medium of blood that transports food, carbon dioxide, and nitrogenous wastes, lymph specifically carries digested and absorbed fats from the intestine and drains excess fluid back into the bloodstream [1][2]. Unlike cytoplasmic fluid, which is intracellular, or urine, which is a filtered waste product, lymph directly originates from and resembles the liquid portion of blood [1][3].
