The Arab Spring was a series of pro-democracy uprisings that took place across several countries in the Middle East and North Africa, including Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria, and Bahrain. The term "Arab Spring" was coined by the media to describe the wave of protests and demonstrations that began in December 2010 in Tunisia, when a street vendor set himself on fire to protest against police harassment, and quickly spread to other countries in the region. The protests were largely fueled by a sense of frustration with autocratic governments, corruption, and economic stagnation, and were largely driven by young people who used social media platforms to mobilize and coordinate their actions. The Arab Spring led to significant political changes in some countries, such as the ousting of long-time leaders in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, while in other countries the uprisings were violently suppressed.
