The first Interim National Government was announced on

The announcement for the formation of the Interim National Government of India was made on August 24, 1946. This followed the proposals of the Cabinet Mission. On August 12, 1946, the Viceroy, Lord Wavell, had invited Jawaharlal Nehru to form the government. The Interim Government was officially sworn in on September 2, 1946, with Nehru serving as the Vice-President of the Executive Council (effectively the Prime Minister). This body functioned as a provisional administration until India's independence on August 15, 1947. Although the Muslim League initially rejected the invitation and launched 'Direct Action Day' on August 16, they eventually joined the Interim Government in October 1946.
