Q136 (UPPCS/2023) History & Culture › Ancient India

Eastern boundary of the Harappa culture is indicated by which of the following?

Result
Your answer: —  Â·  Correct: B

Explanation

The Indus Valley Civilization (IVC) or Harappan Culture was spread over a vast geographical area. The four extreme points that define its boundaries are:

  • Northernmost point: Manda (Jammu and Kashmir) on the banks of the Chenab river.
  • Southernmost point: Daimabad (Maharashtra) on the banks of the Pravara river.
  • Westernmost point: Sutkagan Dor (on the Makran coast, Pakistan-Iran border) on the banks of the Dashk river.
  • Easternmost point: Alamgirpur (Uttar Pradesh) on the banks of the Hindon river.

Alamgirpur is located in the Meerut district and marks the furthest expansion of the Harappan culture into the Gangetic Doab. While Rakhigarhi (Haryana) is one of the largest Harappan sites, it does not represent the eastern boundary. Harappa was one of the two major capital cities, located in present-day Pakistan.
