Your answer:  ·  Correct: C

Explanation

Statement 1 is correct: India currently has 12 operational major ports. These are Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (Ennore), V.O. Chidambaranar (Tuticorin), Visakhapatnam, Paradip, and Kolkata (including Haldia). Although the Union Cabinet approved the development of Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra as a major port in June 2024, it is a greenfield project and not yet "in operation".

Statement 2 is correct: Under the Seventh Schedule of the Indian Constitution, "Major Ports" are in the Union List and are under the administrative control of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. "Non-major ports" (also known as minor ports) are in the Concurrent List but are managed by the respective State Maritime Boards or State Governments under the Indian Ports Act, 1908.
