"Neel Darpan" (The Indigo Mirror) was a seminal Bengali play written by Dinabandhu Mitra in 1860, which vividly depicted the brutal exploitation and atrocities committed by European indigo planters against Indian peasants. While Mitra was the original author, the play was translated into English by the renowned Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta. The translation was published by Reverend James Long, a Christian missionary who sought to bring the plight of the indigo farmers to the attention of the British authorities. Due to the controversial nature of the text, which exposed colonial abuses, James Long was subsequently prosecuted for libel, fined, and imprisoned by the British administration. The play played a critical role in the Indigo Revolt of 1859 and remains a landmark in modern Indian literature for its social realism and political impact.
