Explanation
Seydi Ali Reis (1498–1563) was a renowned Ottoman admiral and navigator who visited India during the 16th Century. In 1553, he was appointed to lead the Ottoman fleet against the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean. After his fleet was severely damaged by storms and naval engagements, he reached the coast of Gujarat. He spent several years traveling through India, including a stay at the court of the Mughal Emperor Humayun in Delhi (around 1555–1556). He eventually returned to Istanbul via an overland route through Central Asia. His famous travelogue, Mir'at al-Mamalik (The Mirror of Countries), documents his experiences and provides valuable historical accounts of the political and social landscape of 16th-century India and the surrounding regions.
