In which year was the mandate of the CISF broadened to provide security to private sector establishments ?

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was originally established under the CISF Act, 1969, primarily to protect Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). Its mandate was significantly expanded following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which highlighted the vulnerability of critical private infrastructure. The Central Industrial Security Force (Amendment) Act, 2009 was passed to enable the force to provide security to private sector establishments on a consultancy and payment basis. Following this amendment, the Infosys campus in Bengaluru became the first private sector unit to receive CISF security cover in July 2009. This move allowed the government to deploy a professional armed force to protect vital economic assets like IT hubs, refineries, and power plants owned by private entities.
