The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was originally established in 1969 to provide security to Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). Following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, the CISF Act, 1968 was amended in 2009 to allow the force to provide security to private sector units on a cost-recovery basis.

• Infosys Technologies Limited, Bengaluru was the first private sector unit to receive CISF security cover in July 2009.
• Patanjali Food and Herbal Park, Haridwar was granted CISF cover in 2015-16.
• Reliance Industries Limited's Corporate IT Park in Navi Mumbai (and its Jamnagar refinery) are also among the few private entities guarded by the CISF.
• ITC Limited, Kolkata does not have CISF deployment; it manages its security through internal staff and private agencies.

As of recent government reports, only a small number of private establishments (approximately 11-12) have been granted this elite security cover based on threat perception.
