Q28 (CISF/2021) History & Culture › Medieval India

Which one of the following was the homeland of Babur?

Explanation

Babur (Zahir-ud-din Muhammad), the founder of the Mughal Empire in India, was born in 1483 in Andijan, the capital of the Farghana Valley (located in modern-day Uzbekistan). He was the eldest son of Umar Shaikh Mirza, the ruler of Farghana. Babur was a direct descendant of Timur on his father's side and Genghis Khan on his mother's side. He inherited the throne of Farghana in 1494 at the age of 12. Although he harbored a lifelong ambition to rule Samarkand (the ancestral seat of Timur) and conquered it briefly several times, he eventually lost both Samarkand and Farghana to the Uzbegs. This forced him to move south to Kabul and eventually towards the Indian subcontinent, where he won the First Battle of Panipat in 1526.
