The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was established on March 10, 1969, under the Central Industrial Security Force Act, 1968, passed by the Parliament of India. Its primary mandate was to provide integrated security cover to Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

The first industrial undertaking where the CISF was formally inducted was the Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) located in Ranchi, Jharkhand. This induction took place on November 1, 1969. At its inception, the force had a modest strength of about 2,800 personnel. Over the decades, its role has expanded significantly to include the security of critical infrastructure such as airports, Delhi Metro, nuclear power plants, and space installations. It is currently one of the largest industrial security forces in the world.
