What is the prescribed term of office of the Chairperson and the Members of the National Human Rights Commission ?
Explanation
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is a statutory body established under the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), 1993. Originally, the term of office was five years or until the age of 70. However, the Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Act, 2019 amended Section 6 of the PHRA to reduce the tenure.
Currently, the Chairperson and every Member of the NHRC hold office for a term of three years or until they attain the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier. They are also eligible for reappointment for another term. This change was introduced to bring the tenure in line with other commissions and to ensure flexibility in appointments.
