Sarkaria Commission was appointed to look into

The Sarkaria Commission was set up in June 1983 by the Government of India to examine the relationship and balance of power between state and central governments. It was headed by Justice Ranjit Singh Sarkaria, a retired judge of the Supreme Court of India. The commission's charter was to review the working of the existing arrangements between the Union and the States in all spheres and recommend appropriate changes within the framework of the Constitution.

• The commission submitted its final report in 1988, containing 247 recommendations.
• One of its most significant recommendations was the establishment of a permanent Inter-State Council under Article 263 of the Constitution, which was eventually set up in 1990.
• It also provided crucial guidelines regarding the appointment of Governors and the restricted use of Article 356 (President's Rule).
