The GIB is primarily found in the arid grasslands of Rajasthan and Gujarat. A major cause of its mortality is collision with overhead high-voltage power lines; the bird has poor frontal vision and a heavy body, making it difficult to detect and maneuver away from cables in time. In April 2021, the Court ordered that all low-voltage lines be moved underground and high-voltage lines be converted where feasible. In March 2024, the Court modified this blanket order to balance conservation with India's renewable energy goals, appointing an expert committee to oversee technical feasibility and redraw priority conservation areas.
