Who among the following was the first Viceroy of India under British Rule ?
Explanation
Lord Canning (Viscount Canning) served as the Governor-General of India from 1856 to 1862. Following the Revolt of 1857, the British Parliament enacted the Government of India Act 1858, which abolished the East India Company's rule and transferred the administration of India directly to the British Crown. The Act changed the designation of the Governor-General of India to the Viceroy of India, who acted as the direct representative of the British monarch. Consequently, Lord Canning became the first Viceroy of India. Lord Dalhousie preceded him as Governor-General (1848–1856), while Lord Cornwallis served much earlier (1786–1793). Lord Mayo served as Viceroy later, from 1869 to 1872.
