Lake Balkhash is located in southeastern Kazakhstan. It is one of the largest lakes in Asia and the 15th largest in the world. The lake belongs to an endorheic (closed) basin in Central Asia. A unique geographical feature of Lake Balkhash is the stark difference in water quality between its two sections: the western part is relatively shallow and composed of fresh water, while the eastern part is deep and saline. These two parts are connected by the narrow Uzynaral Strait. The Ili River, which originates in the mountains of China, is the primary source of water for the lake. While Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan are in the same region, the lake lies entirely within Kazakh territory.
