Dinabandhu Mitra published a play in Bengali titled : Neel Darpan (Blue MiiTor), which depicted the atrocities on the indigo planters. The play was translated into English by :

Dinabandhu Mitra's play 'Neel Darpan' (1860) vividly depicted the exploitation of Indian farmers by British indigo planters. While Reverend James Long took the initiative to have the play translated into English to inform the government about these atrocities, the actual translation is widely attributed to the renowned Bengali poet Michael Madhusudan Dutta [1]. Although the first English edition published in 1861 used the pseudonym 'A Native' to protect the translator's identity, contemporary observers and modern scholars almost unanimously identify Dutta as the translator. Reverend James Long was subsequently prosecuted and imprisoned for criminal libel for publishing and distributing the translated work. The play remains a landmark in Indian literature for its role in the Indigo Revolt and its impact on the development of commercial theatre in Bengal.
